From protecting voting rights and strengthening our democracy to uplifting neighborhoods across our region, my work continues every day here in Rochester and in Washington.
Read more about that work below:
How We’re Fighting Back

This week marks the 62nd anniversary of the historic Civil Rights March on Washington, a defining moment in our nation’s struggle for civil rights and equality for all. This was a call for justice and opportunity for all Americans, values that continue to guide our work today.
As the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I am committed to carrying forward that legacy by safeguarding access to the ballot box, protecting the integrity of our democratic institutions, and ensuring every American’s voice is heard. The fight for equality and representation did not end in 1963—it remains our charge and responsibility in 2025. We honor those who marched by re-committing our efforts to strengthen our democracy and advance the cause for future generations.
Uplifting Our Neighbors

Connected Communities is working to build up the EMMA and Beachwood neighborhoods by engaging residents, service providers, and community partners, and this year, they’re celebrating ten years of their mission in action.
I joined their team at the Neighborhood HUB where residents can access essential programs, services, and opportunities within walking distance of their home. Read more about their work to uplift our community here.
Connecting with Local Farmers

I’m proud to support agriculture in our community and across New York State. I met with local farmers to talk about the upcoming farm bill and hear about the challenges they are facing. Our farmers play a vital role in both our economy and our way of life. Their insights help guide my work in Washington, and, as Vice Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ll keep fighting to support the agricultural industry here in New York.
Visiting Homesteads for Hope

I had an inspiring visit with Homesteads for Hope—a local community farm where everyone, regardless of ability, can find belonging and purpose. Here, apprentices are gaining hands-on experience, building confidence, and developing life skills in nature’s classroom. This organization strengthens our entire community by fostering inclusion and connection. I’m proud to work alongside them to support our neighbors.
Register for an Upcoming Town Hall
My office is teaming up with Civic Genius, a program of the National Civic League, to host a new kind of town hall—one designed to bring more voices to the table for a thoughtful and productive conversation.
Ours will be one of the very first communities in the country to use this innovative format developed by the National Civic League to have a real conversation about what people in our district are experiencing. To ensure constituents from all corners of our district have a voice in the discussion, participants will be selected by lottery to create a panel of residents that reflects our district’s demographics.
Enter the civic lottery here by August 31 at 11:59pm. If you are randomly selected to participate, we will notify you by September 5.
Even if you are not selected in the lottery, you can give your input here. Visit the FAQ to learn more.
Please know my office is always here to help. Visit morelle.house.gov to learn more about how we can assist you and your family. Due to ongoing actions by the Trump administration affecting federal agencies, case processing may be slightly delayed. We appreciate your patience and remain committed to resolving your cases promptly.

It was another busy week in Rochester, meeting with constituents and visiting the organizations that keep our community running. Read about my work this week below:
How We’re Fighting Back

Donald Trump’s recent attack on mail-in voting is a blatant lie. It has been a secure and safe method of voting and has been used in many states for decades without incident.
Donald Trump is scared of voters, so he’s rigging the rules to protect himself. I joined Ali Vitali on MSNBC this week to highlight the absurdity of Trump’s statements and discuss how I’m fighting to protect access to the ballot box for every American through my work as the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration.
I also joined Phil Mattingly on CNN’s The Lead this week. President Trump’s suggestion to end mail-in voting is unconstitutional, it’s unlawful, and it’s unserious. We are going to fight it every step of the way.
Fighting for our Students

In just eight months, the Trump administration has gutted nearly half a billion dollars from programs our children need—funds that support teacher training, address learning gaps, and provide resources for students in crisis.
This week, I stood with local education and childcare advocates, including Brian Lewis from ROC the Future, to call out the Trump administration’s deliberate attack on education, including programs like Head Start.
Here in Rochester, we understand that education is the best investment we can make in our future. As Vice Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Committee, I’ll fight to protect Head Start, expand Universal Pre-K, restore the Child Tax Credit, and make sure education funding reaches the communities that need it most. Coffee with our Community
I met with neighbors in Fairport this week for a cup of coffee and a conversation about my work in Congress. Since he took office, the Trump administration has made reckless decisions that put people in our region at risk. This event was an important opportunity to hear our constituents’ concerns and share how we’re fighting back. It is community engagement like this that inspires me to continue my work in Congress to deliver for our region.
I was honored to join Judge Geraci this week for a naturalization ceremony. Each of these new American citizens will be an important member of our society. Their unique stories and backgrounds will help us grow stronger. This process stands as a reminder of our nation’s ability to welcome people from all corners of the world and create the beautiful tapestry of cultures and perspectives that make us all uniquely American.
Updates at the Greater Rochester International Airport

Alongside County Executive Bello, I stopped by the Greater Rochester International Airport this week for a tour of their renovations and the Air Command Center. Their newly updated Frederick Douglass Airfield Observatory will introduce visitors to our community and our history upon their arrival.
This team works tirelessly to keep our community’s transportation hub running smoothly and safely. I was grateful for the opportunity to hear about their important work. Please know my office is always here to help. Visit morelle.house.gov to learn more about how we can assist you and your family. Due to ongoing actions by the Trump administration affecting federal agencies, case processing may be slightly delayed. We appreciate your patience and remain committed to resolving your cases promptly.

How We’re Fighting Back

This week, I met with seniors at Episcopal Senior Living Communities’ Valley Manor to talk about the Trump administration’s disastrous budget and how its cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and other lifeline programs could affect them. While the Trump administration attempts to gut these essential resources, I’m fighting for each of our seniors’ right to age with support.
These cuts have left many in our community scared and angry, and we all have a responsibility to do right by our neighbors, especially the older Americans who have worked their entire lives to contribute to our communities. Protecting the Right to Retire with Dignity
On August 14, 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law. For 90 years, through wars, recessions, changing political landscapes, and economic shifts, Social Security has stood as a pillar of stability for millions of Americans. For nearly a century, every American who signed up for a lifetime of work was given the promise: if you work hard and play by the rules, you will have the support to retire with dignity. That promise is now under attack. We cannot, and will not, allow Republicans in Washington to dismantle the sacred covenant that has been kept for 90 years. I’ll keep fighting to keep this program strong—not just for today’s seniors but for our children, grandchildren, and the generations to come.
Connecting our Community to Critical Resources

This week, I joined the team at TogetherNow to announce the launch of MyWayFinder, a community-powered and human-centered system that brings together healthcare, human services, and education in one connected network. As board chair, I’ve worked over the past eight years to bring to life the first tool of its kind in our region, designed to make it faster and easier for people to find, coordinate, and receive the help they need.
It’s not just a new tool—it will change how we care for each other as a community, because when you meet people where they are, center their lived experience, and connect them with coordinated care, they succeed. Read more here.
Supporting Our National Security

I’m proud to represent a region filled with innovative companies leading the way in technology that supports our national security. This week, local leaders gathered for the Department of Defense Northeast Regional Council Conference here in Rochester.
It was great to be with these cutting-edge organizations and hear about the important work they are doing to contribute to our nation’s defense. Please know my office is always here to help. Visit morelle.house.gov to learn more about how we can assist you and your family. Due to ongoing actions by the Trump administration affecting federal agencies, case processing may be slightly delayed. This week, I spoke out against partisan efforts to undermine our democracy and joined partners to highlight the devastating impacts of Trump’s reconciliation package on healthcare access.
Read more below:
How We’re Fighting Back
I joined MSNBC’s Way Too Early this week to speak out against President Trump’s blatant attempt to change the rules in the middle of the game through hyper-partisan redistricting in Texas.
This isn’t how democracy is meant to work, and it does nothing to benefit the American people. I’ll keep using my role as top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, which oversees federal elections, to fight for every American’s voice to be heard at the ballot box.
Six Decades of the Voting Rights Act
This week, we celebrated 60 years of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This landmark legislation was enacted to eliminate racial discrimination in voting. While the work to protect access to the ballot box continues, we remember those who came before us and the progress they made. We carry on the fight they began to bring America closer to its foundational promise.
Protecting Access to Healthcare
Trillium Health and other community health centers like it are lifelines for Rochester families. Donald Trump’s cuts to Medicaid put their future—and our neighbor’s access to care—at risk. When the changes from this budget are implemented, health centers will face significant funding losses, increased administrative burdens, and policy shifts that will leave millions without health insurance coverage.
This week I stood with our local partners to outline the impacts of this disastrous budget and reaffirm our commitment to protecting the healthcare services our community depends on. Read more: Congressman Joe Morelle Exposes Local Impact of Trump’s Healthcare Cuts
Supporting a Lifetime of Learning

I joined the Rochester Central School District for a visit to their Office of Adult and Career Education Services, where we met with the inspiring adult learners who are building brighter futures through education, job training, and civic engagement. Many of these students are immigrants, refugees, and other adults experiencing major life transitions. I’m proud to support their work to uplift our community and prepare vulnerable residents for a successful career contributing to our region.

I spent this week in Rochester advocating for our community, meeting with education leaders, and visiting our seniors to hear their thoughts. Read more about my work this week below:
How We’re Fighting Back

This week, I stood with local advocates to call attention to the urgent need to uphold the promises our nation made to our Afghan allies. The Trump administration has chosen to dismantle Operation Enduring Welcome and the Coordinator for Afghan Relocation Efforts (CARE), both essential lifelines for Afghan allies entering the U.S. through the Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program.
These are brave individuals who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with American troops during the war in Afghanistan. To abandon these individuals is to betray our word, our credibility, and the very ideals we claim to uphold. My office continues to assist families navigating the SIV process, and I won’t stop advocating for a stronger, more humane immigration policy that honors our commitments and safeguards our standing as a global leader.
Recognizing 60 Years of Medicare and Medicaid

This week marked the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, two of the most impactful and enduring achievements in our nation’s history. Since their creation in 1965, these programs have served as a critical safety net for millions of Americans, ensuring access to quality, affordable healthcare.
Yet, despite their success, Medicare and Medicaid are under attack. The recently passed budget bill includes deep and damaging cuts to these vital programs that would reduce benefits, increase costs for families, and put essential care out of reach for those who need it most. I remain committed to the fight to protect these programs and ensure they remain strong for generations to come. Healthcare is a right, not a privilege, and I won’t stop working to defend that promise.
Supporting Older Americans

It was an honor to spend time with our vibrant Latino senior community this week when I stopped by Centro de Oro, a center dedicated to the wellness, health, and socialization of our Latino seniors. During my visit, I shared an update on the issues most effecting older adults in our community, including devastating cuts to Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP from the harmful budget bill. I’m grateful to all the seniors who welcomed me. Their voices matter, and I remain committed to advocating for policies in Washington that protect their dignity, health, and security.
Investing in Our Youth

I had the opportunity to visit the EnCompass summer learning program at Nazareth University—a shining example of how we can invest in our children’s future through education and opportunity.
Hosted in the Golisano Academic Cetner, this initiative provides rigorous academic support, hands-on enrichment experiences, nutritious meals, and safe transportation, all working to prevent summer learning loss and empower families in our community. I look forward to our continued work together to ensure every child has access to the opportunities that build a successful life.
I Want to Hear From You
I am excited to announce a unique opportunity for residents of the 25th Congressional District to give input on the critical issues facing our communities. My office is teaming up with Civic Genius, a program of the National Civic League, to host a new kind of town hall—one designed to bring more voices to the table for a thoughtful and productive conversation.
Here’s how it works:
- Residents will discuss issues in small groups and give feedback on different policy ideas—both with each other and with me. This format will allow us to engage in deeper dialogue than at a traditional town hall.
- To ensure that constituents from all corners of our district have a voice in the discussion, we will select participants by lottery and create a panel of residents that reflects our district’s demographics. Every resident of the 25th Congressional District is eligible to register.
Ours will be one of the very first congressional districts in the country to use this innovative town hall format developed by the National Civic League. My goal is to have a real conversation about what people in our district are experiencing, what is most important to you, and how I can best represent you in Congress. Visit the FAQ to learn more.
Enter the civic lottery here by August 31 at 11:59pm. If you are randomly selected to participate, we will notify you by September 5.

After a busy few days in Washington, I headed back home to Rochester early this week as Republican turmoil once again paralyzed the important work we’re doing in the House.
I’m fighting alongside my democratic colleagues to hold them accountable and move us back toward a government that works for our communities. Read more about my week below:
How We’re Fighting Back

Just over a year ago, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down a disastrous ruling giving presidents absolute immunity from criminal prosecution. This decision undermines the very foundation of our constitutional government. The President of the United States should be equal in the eyes of the law with every other American, our nation relies on that principle. This week, I reintroduced my constitutional amendment to make sure presidents are held accountable under the law. It would reverse this disastrous decision and restore the constitutional understanding of immunity that served our nation well for nearly two-and-a-half centuries.
Watch a replay of my press conference here.
Protecting the Fundamental Right to Vote
This week, under the guise of ‘election security,’ my Republican colleagues called a Committee on House Administration hearing to create an illusion of election oversight while they make the case to purge eligible voters from voter lists.
States controlled by Republicans have recently engaged in systematic, illegal voter purges. This puts hardworking Americans at risk of being disenfranchised. I’m committed to the fight to expand access to the ballot box and ensure every eligible American’s right to vote is protected.
Honoring the Officers Who Defended the Capitol on January 6th
Speaker Johnson refuses to hang the plaque honoring the officers who defended the Capitol on January 6th, as is required by law. Alongside over one hundred of my democratic colleagues, I’ve posted a replica of the plaque outside my office in Washington.
We won’t forget their service.
Protecting New York’s Agricultural Economy

It’s hard to visit the Finger Lakes without enjoying our amazing vineyards and orchards, but they’re under serious threat from the Spotted Lanternfly. This week, I introduced my bipartisan legislation to stop the spread of the invasive pest.
This bill would designate the spotted lanternfly as a high-priority research and extension initiative under the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The designation will help support research projects that pursue creative solutions as we work to protect New York’s crops from being decimated. Yesterday, House Republicans passed Donald Trump’s recissions package, which cancels roughly $9 billion in previously approved funding for essential public programs, such as PBS, NPR, and rural radio.
Once again, House Republicans are rubber-stamping reckless and cruel spending cuts that will have a direct impact on communities like ours. Ripping away free educational resources like Sesame Street does nothing to improve the lives of our children and does not move us any closer to solving the real challenges our families face. My Republican colleagues need to stop bending the knee to Donald Trump and start standing up and standing with Democrats to protect the programs, resources, and fundamental rights Americans rely on.

As Vice Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee, I spent this week speaking out in hearings on congressional spending bills. In the Commerce, Justice, and Science bill, Republicans are eager to cut billions of dollars from the National Science Foundation, research, and education budgets. This will leave America behind as a global innovation leader. Our economy—and our children—will pay the price.
The Transportation, Housing, and Urban Development spending bill proposed by House Republicans not only cuts entire programs dedicated to housing affordability but also pulls the rug out from under working families trying to stay afloat. Instead of investing in homes, transit, and opportunities for working families to get ahead, House Republicans and President Trump continue to pull resources away from the working class to further consolidate wealth and power into the hands of the wealthiest Americans. I will keep fighting for a budget that reflects our American values—a budget that works for all families, not just the wealthy few.
Connecting with our Community Thank you to all those in our community who joined my virtual town hall this week. This was an important opportunity to talk about the Republicans’ devastating budget bill that was recently passed, and how it will affect our region. I detailed the harmful cuts this bill imposes to lifelines like Medicaid, Medicare, and food assistance programs, all to provide tax breaks for Trump’s billionaire friends. I also shared how we’re going to keep fighting back on behalf of our neighbors, because this fight isn’t over. Watch a replay of the full town hall here. Remembering an American Hero This week marked five years since we lost a true American hero—Congressman John Lewis. He dedicated his life to protecting the sacred right to vote and showed the world what good trouble looks like. As the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I’m working to carry on his life’s mission. Efforts to suppress votes haven’t gone away. It’s our duty to meet these challenges with the same moral clarity John Lewis did. I’m fighting to pass legislation that protects the right to vote for every American, and I’ll keep honoring Congressman John Lewis not just in memory, but in action. Assisting Local Families Every day, my office works to help members of our community navigate federal agencies, access important resources, and secure money owed to them. So far this year, my team has successfully resolved over 380 cases and returned over $9.8 million owed to local businesses and members of our community. It’s a privilege to be able to assist our community and the individuals and organizations who call it home. To read more about our work and learn how we may be able to assist you or someone you know, visit morelle.house.gov. Due to ongoing actions by the Trump administration affecting federal agencies, case processing may be slightly delayed. We appreciate your patience and remain committed to resolving your cases promptly. |

Last week, House Republicans passed a deeply damaging budget bill that strips healthcare from 17 million Americans, slashes billions in critical food assistance, and guts the core resources our communities depend on—all to hand out massive tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires. My office has received calls from many of you who have questions and, like me, are angry, frustrated, and deeply disappointed. I want to hear your concerns and answer your questions about what’s next, because this fight isn’t over.
Please join me for a Virtual Town Hall next Monday, July 14th at 5:30 PM. RSVP and ask your questions here.
How We’re Fighting Back
I met with our local press this week to keep the conversation going about the threats our community faces from Trump’s budget bill. From healthcare and food assistance cuts to mountains of added federal debt, the impacts of this legislation will be felt by everyone, and it’s all to create tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans. Keeping our communities informed is an important part of fighting back, and we’re going to keep spreading the word about this disastrous legislation.
Speaking Out Against Threats to Our Community’s Healthcare
I joined fellow elected officials, representatives from Protect Our Care, and advocates from across New York State to highlight the serious threat to community healthcare Trump’s budget poses.
This bill is the largest change in healthcare access since the Affordable Care Act, but unlike the ACA, this bill takes significant steps to rip healthcare away from those who need it, rather than making it more accessible. I’m going to keep working with healthcare advocates to push for proactive legislation that will help protect against cuts to our healthcare systems. I’ll also continue to use every available investigative and judicial tool at my disposal to ensure accountability as we keep fighting for American families.
Continuing the Fight for Free and Fair Elections
I had the honor of visiting the traveling Smithsonian exhibit, “Voices and Votes: Democracy in America,” at the Genesee Country Village and Museum this week. The exhibition examines the history of the United States’ experiment of a government, “of, by, and for the people.”
As the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I oversee the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, which put on this program. I’m also using my position to continue the fight for equitable access to the ballot box for every American.

Today, House Republicans forced through the most damaging and heartless piece of legislation in generations—a betrayal of the people we are elected to serve. This bill will strip health insurance from 17 million Americans and slash food assistance for nearly 3 million Americans, including 900,000 seniors.
It includes the largest cut to Medicaid in U.S. history, defunds Planned Parenthood, and raises health insurance premiums for some New Yorkers by nearly $2,000. Meanwhile, it adds $3.3 trillion to the national deficit—all to fund tax breaks for Donald Trump’s billionaire friends. It’s not budgeting—it’s cruelty. These aren’t just numbers—they’re neighbors, families, and frontline workers trying to get ahead. This bill was never about helping working families; it was about rewarding the wealthy and well-connected at their expense.
Like so many of you, I’m angry, frustrated, and deeply disappointed—but I am not done fighting. We are going to keep standing up for the American people.
This fight isn’t over. Not by a long shot.
Until next week,
Joe Morelle New York’s 25th Congressional District

Over the weekend, U.S. forces launched strikes against Iranian military targets. I remain steadfast in my belief that Iran must never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. There can be no lasting peace in the Middle East while the regime continues funding extremist groups and threatening the United States and Israel.
At the same time, I am deeply concerned by President Trump’s leadership in this moment. His pattern of erratic, politically motivated decision-making only deepens the fear many Americans are feeling today.
We need steadiness, not chaos. This is a moment that demands diplomacy, discipline, and a serious commitment to securing lasting peace.
As we pursue a path forward grounded in these values, we must not lose sight of those already bearing the greatest burden. I am holding in my heart the innocent civilians caught in the crossfire—and our brave service members risking their lives abroad. Read more about my work this week below:
How We’re Fighting Back

This week, I joined my colleagues on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies for a hearing with United States Attorney General Pam Bondi. A.G. Bondi came before our subcommittee as a part of the annual budget process, where Trump administration officials come before Congress to answer questions about their budget proposals for the following year.
During the hearing, I asked A.G. Bondi about President Trump’s decision to issue Presidential pardons to 1,500 people who participated in the violent riot at our Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Instead of answering this serious question, she pivoted to conspiracy theories about the former president and filibustered from her seat. It’s clear A.G. Bondi was unprepared to answer any sort of policy questions, and her conduct during the hearing was an embarrassment to our justice system.
I’m going to continue to use my voice to push back against this administration and get the answers people deserve.
Safeguarding Healthcare for All
Last Friday, I joined WXXI’s Connections with Evan Dawson to give an update on my work in Washington over the previous months. One of the topics we covered was House Republicans’ recent efforts to strip Medicaid and SNAP away from millions of Americans—a move so unpopular, members of their own party are starting to grow skeptical. During our discussion, I reaffirmed my commitment to speaking out against this draconian legislation in Washington and here at home—because our families deserve better.

Keeping Elected Officials and Their Families Safe
Earlier this month, Mary Beth and I were deeply saddened and disturbed by the apparent targeted political attacks in Minnesota. Violence is never the answer, and all forms of political violence should always be condemned.
In response to these horrific attacks, I’m working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to help bolster security for members of Congress and their families. This is literally an issue of life or death for elected officials at all levels, not just in Congress, and it’s critical we do all we can to help keep lawmakers and their families safe and secure. While we continue to pray for State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, as well as the family of State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, let’s honor their lives and legacies with action.

Creating Connections For Our Community
Over the past 18 months, I’ve been working alongside Monroe County Executive Adam Bello, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, and Ogden Supervisor Mike Zale to re-open the Gillett Road bridge. The closure of this bridge was presenting significant challenges for our neighbors in Ogden, but just this week railroad company CSX announced they would begin repairs on this critical piece of infrastructure. This is an important win for our neighbors in Ogden, whose daily life has been disrupted due to the closure. I’m proud to have joined with our local leaders to hold CSX accountable and push for this long-overdue repair, and I’m grateful CSX is taking action to restore this essential connection for our neighbors.
Continuing the Fight for Reproductive Rights

Three years ago this week, the radical conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, stripping away five decades of Constitutionally protected healthcare from millions of women.
I’ve been fighting tirelessly to restore this right, because health care decisions should be between you, your doctor, and no one else. Please know my office is always here to help.
