May 22, 2026 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week the corruption in the White House took center stage as Donald Trump\u2019s Justice Department announced plans to use taxpayer money to create a $1.8 billion political slush fund to reward his loyalists like the violent criminals who stormed the Capitol on January 6th. 
 
This is disgraceful and it must be stopped. I joined CNN This Morning with Audie Cornish to talk about just how corrupt and ridiculous this is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump Administration is trying to bring their cruel and inhumane immigration agenda into the heart of Rochester by installing ICE detention cells in the downtown Federal Building. They are doing this with no regard for the people of our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am fighting back so these detention cells never open. This week, I introduced the Respect Our Communities (ROC) Act, legislation that would require transparency, public input, and approval from state and local leaders before the federal government can move forward with new ICE or CBP detention facilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Trump administration pushed this project into downtown Rochester without listening to the community, they made it clear they do not believe local voices matter. Rochester deserved a voice in this process, and every community across America deserves the same. The ROC Act would require public notice, environmental and economic reviews, opportunities for community feedback, and notification to Congress before any new detention facility can move forward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My team and I are continuing to explore every legal avenue available to stop this project and challenge the abuses of power carried out by Donald Trump and ICE agents both here in Rochester and across the country.\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0also keep fighting to cut off funding for ICE and other efforts to weaponize the federal government against the American people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lowering Housing Costs for Families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housing costs are out of control, and too many families are being priced out of the communities they call home. This week, I voted to pass bipartisan legislation cracking down on large corporate investors that are buying up single-family homes and driving up prices for working families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wall Street firms and out-of-state investors should not be allowed to outbid first-time homebuyers and turn neighborhoods into profit centers while families struggle to afford a place to live. This legislation takes an important step toward restoring fairness to the housing market and helping more Americans achieve homeownership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affordable housing is essential to strong communities and economic stability.\u00a0I\u2019ll\u00a0continue fighting for policies that lower costs, expand housing opportunities, and ensure families here in Rochester have a fair shot at building a future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fighting for Rochester\u2019s Energy Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I spoke out during the House Appropriations Committee markup of the Energy and Water Development funding bill against devastating cuts that would raise energy costs, weaken our national security, and undermine America\u2019s scientific leadership. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

House Republicans\u2019 proposal slashes critical energy innovation and research programs, cuts heating assistance and home weatherization funding, and rolls back investments that help keep energy affordable and reliable for working families. I voted no because families in Rochester and across the country will pay the price through higher utility bills and fewer economic opportunities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also fought to protect funding for the University of Rochester\u2019s Laboratory for Laser Energetics, a world-class research facility right here in our community. The bill includes a proposed $23 million cut to the Lab\u2019s Inertial Confinement Fusion program, threatening dozens of jobs, critical scientific research, and America\u2019s ability to maintain a safe and reliable nuclear deterrent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing up for Common Sense Gun Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I led more than 90 of my colleagues in demanding answers from the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives after the Trump administration announced plans to roll back dozens of federal gun safety regulations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communities across the country continue to face the devastating impacts of gun violence, and weakening enforcement and dismantling commonsense protections moves our country in the wrong direction. Americans deserve to know why this administration is making it harder for federal agencies to keep illegal guns off our streets and out of dangerous hands. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The administration\u2019s proposed changes would scale back oversight of gun dealers, weaken background check requirements, and further undermine the federal government\u2019s ability to prevent gun trafficking and violent crime. Public safety should never be sacrificed to score political points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Memorial Day Weekend<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who made what President Abraham Lincoln called the \u201clast full measure of devotion\u201d in service to our country. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their sacrifice secured the freedoms we enjoy today and reminds us that our democracy is not guaranteed. It is defended generation after generation by those willing to put service above self. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we gather with family and friends this weekend, we pause to remember the heroes who never came home and the military families who carry their legacy forward every day. Their courage, patriotism, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.\u00a0A\u00a0grateful community stands with\u00a0them\u00a0today and always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I questioned Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth during a House Appropriations hearing. I raised my serious concerns about America\u2019s military involvement in Iran and the lack of transparency around how many taxpayer dollars have been spent on the conflict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s been 11 weeks since Trump began his war in Iran and trying to get a reporting of the dollars that have been spent has been excruciating. I think General Washington reported quicker to the Continental Congress. Congress has a responsibility to conduct oversight, ask tough questions, and demand honesty from the Department of Defense. The American people deserve a clear, official accounting of how much money has been spent, and what exactly it has achieved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fighting for Public Safety and American Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this week\u2019s Appropriations markup on the Commerce, Justice, and Science funding bill, I spoke out against House Republicans proposed cuts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when communities across the country are facing rising costs, growing public safety concerns, and increased global competition, this bill moves us in the wrong direction. The legislation cuts critical investments in economic development, manufacturing, scientific research, and public safety programs that communities rely on every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I raised serious concerns about the Trump administration\u2019s decision to dismantle the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, one of the federal government\u2019s most effective bipartisan tools for combating drug trafficking and transnational organized crime. Congress has a responsibility to invest in public safety, economic opportunity, and innovation, not weaken the very programs Americans depend on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protecting our Democracy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joined Representatives Jamie Raskin and Robert Garcia this week in introducing the Protecting our Democracy Act, legislation to strengthen accountability in government, crack down on corruption, and reinforce the principle that no president is above the law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Corruption in government doesn\u2019t happen overnight. It grows when leaders believe the rules no longer apply to them. At a time when Donald Trump and his allies continue testing the limits of our democracy for their own political gain, we have a responsibility to protect the checks and balances that safeguard the American people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This legislation would strengthen oversight, increase transparency, protect whistleblowers, guard our elections from foreign interference, and prevent presidents from profiting off public office through corrupt \u201cpay-to-play\u201d schemes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, the Supreme Court\u2019s decision in Louisiana v. Callais<\/a> put a fundamental right at risk and raised serious questions about the future of our democracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shame on President Trump and his cronies on the Supreme Court. It is not simply a court case. This is about our right to vote. For over 60 years, the Voting Rights Act has helped protect every American\u2019s voice at the ballot box. People marched, fought, and died for that right. I will not sit by and let this corrupt Supreme Court take away these hard-won freedoms. Nor will I let the Supreme Court strip away the people\u2019s power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To every American who is worried right now: we see you, we hear you, and we are ready to fight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We held the first official meeting of the Anti-Corruption and Democracy Reform Task Force this week. It is the first in a series of discussions this Task Force plans to have, examining each of the three branches of government and our electoral system\u2014taking a close look at the root causes of corruption and examining ideas for how we create a stronger, more unified democracy that works for every American. We need real change, and we are determined to find the best path forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


I also joined Talking Points Memo to discuss how House Democrats are preparing for growing threats to our elections and the rule of law. We cannot ignore what we are seeing unfold in real time. From efforts to undermine confidence in our election system to attempts to rewrite the rules to benefit those in power, the warning signs are clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why we are taking this seriously. We\u2019re planning, we\u2019re organizing, and we\u2019re working to ensure that the will of the American people is upheld no matter what challenges come our way. The State of Voting Rights and Elections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I joined Representative Terri Sewel for a shadow hearing on, \u201cThe State of Voting Rights and Elections,\u201d bringing together leading experts to examine the real and growing threats to our democracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the last decade plus, the Supreme Court has tried to unwind the still necessary protections of the Voting Rights Act to set back the progress we\u2019ve made. We have never been a perfect union, but through centuries of struggle, countless Americans strived to make real our Founders\u2019 promises of freedom and equality. That is what the VRA was about, making a more perfect union. And that remains our duty today. It always will be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lowering Costs and Supporting Families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, House Republicans brought forward a \u201cskinny\u201d farm bill that would lock in deep cuts to food\u202fassistance,\u202ffail to\u202flower costs for working families, and leave farmers without the support they urgently need.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families are already stretched thin, trying to afford groceries, pay their bills, and keep food on the table. Instead of helping address those challenges, Donald Trump and House Republicans chose to double down on policies that make life harder.\u202fI\u2019m\u202fgoing to keep fighting to restore support for families, not take it away.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcoming a Local Faith Leader to Washington<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was an honor to welcome Rabbi Peter Stein of Temple B\u2019rith Kodesh to Washington to serve as Guest Chaplain in the House of Representatives this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rabbi Stein has spent decades serving our Rochester community with compassion, wisdom, and a deep commitment to justice. His leadership has brought people together across faiths, helping to bridge divides and remind us of the importance of treating one another with dignity and respect. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Guest Chaplain tradition reflects one of our most fundamental freedoms, the freedom to practice our faith and serve our communities. Rabbi Stein embodies those values every day through his work and his example. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was proud to recognize him on the House floor and grateful for the opportunity to share his leadership with colleagues from across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

April 24, 2026<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, we received troubling reports that an area mother, Dolores Bustamente Romero, has been detained by ICE and is facing deportation. If these reports are true, what we are seeing is a deeply disturbing failure of due process and a blatant abuse of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump talked about deporting \u2018murderers and rapists,\u2019 the \u2018worst of the worst.\u2019 It turns out that was a blatant lie. Dolores is not a criminal. She is a mother, a worker, and a neighbor who has built her life here in Rochester. Ripping her away from her family and moving her across state lines without transparency or accountability is not about public safety. It is the direct result of Trump-era immigration policies that prioritize cruelty, chaos, and fear over fairness and the rule of law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may come as a surprise to the President, but in this country, due process is not optional. It is a fundamental right. No one should be shuffled across the country and fast-tracked toward deportation without the opportunity to have their case heard fully and fairly. What we are seeing in Dolores\u2019s case is not just an injustice against one person, but a dangerous erosion of the legal protections every person in this country is entitled to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ICE and the Department of Homeland Security must immediately return Dolores to her family and ensure she is afforded the due process she deserves. Anything less is a betrayal of our values and a stain on our justice system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will continue to speak out against these abuses and vote against any funding for ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security until serious reforms are enacted to put a stop to their unchecked reign of cruelty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, as Vice Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee, I pushed back against proposals that raise costs and shortchange working families. These funding decisions are important, and I\u2019m fighting to make sure they reflect our values and priorities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the budget hearing for the Department of Commerce, I questioned Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. His answers were deeply concerning and conflicted with public statements made by President Trump once again illustrating the lack of transparency from the Trump Administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accountability matters. If the administration is going to make decisions that impact jobs, prices, and economic growth, they owe it to the American people to be straightforward about those decisions and their consequences. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investing in Support for our Veterans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I joined my colleagues on the House Appropriations Committee for the full committee markup of the Fiscal Year 2027 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs funding bill. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are areas in the proposed bill that move things in the right direction, including adding safeguards to help ensure the VA puts veterans first. But, as it stands, this bill falls short of honoring our commitment to our veterans. It fails to guarantee funding for the Toxic Exposures Fund, putting consistent care for veterans exposed to toxic substances at risk. It also fails to meet our commitments to allies through NATO infrastructure investments and includes provisions that undermine bipartisan progress. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We cannot ask our service members to sacrifice for our country then turn around and leave them without support when they return home. I fought for amendments to strengthen this bill, and I\u2019ll keep working to support our veterans by lowering costs, protecting access to care, and delivering on the promises we\u2019ve made to our veterans and military families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporting Hardworking Americans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I delivered opening remarks during the full committee markup of the Fiscal Year 2027 Financial Services and General Government funding bill, laying out serious concerns with a proposal that fails to support working families in many ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when costs are already too high, this bill moves us in the wrong direction. It cuts funding for agencies that protect consumers and keep markets fair, including the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Federal Trade Commission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On top of that, the bill reduces funding for election security at a time when the Trump Administration is attempting to take over our elections and silence American voters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m focused on ensuring every American\u2019s voice is heard, protecting consumers, and creating fairness in our economy, not tilting the scales toward Donald Trump\u2019s billionaire friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Library Week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, we\u2019re celebrating National Library Week and the founding anniversary of the Library of Congress, an institution that has served as the backbone of knowledge, research, and public access to information for more than two centuries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Libraries are community anchors, places where families learn, students grow, job seekers find opportunity, and neighbors connect. As top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I\u2019m proud to help oversee the Library of Congress and support its mission to preserve our nation\u2019s history and make knowledge accessible to the American people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I announced the launch of a new Anti-Corruption and Democracy Reform Task Force, bringing together Members of Congress and national advocacy leaders to take on corruption in Washington and restore trust in government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For too many families in Rochester and across the country, rising costs are being driven higher by a system that puts special interests ahead of the public. This Task Force is focused on changing that by advancing real reforms that strengthen transparency, accountability, and integrity across our government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m leading my colleagues as we fight back against corruption in the Executive Branch, work to strengthen ethics rules in Congress and the courts, and root out the influence of dark money in our elections while expanding access to the ballot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is about restoring faith that our government is working for you, not the wealthy and well-connected. I\u2019ll continue working with partners across the country to build a comprehensive agenda that delivers accountability and lowers costs for working families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

American Conversations with Heather Cox Richardson<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sat down with historian Heather Cox Richardson this week for a wide-ranging conversation about the state of American democracy, the role of Congress, and what it takes to restore public trust in our institutions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Ranking Member of the House Administration Committee, I spoke about the critical work we do to ensure our democracy functions as it should, overseeing federal elections, safeguarding certification, and maintaining the integrity of the House itself. At a time when we are seeing rising threats to our elections through disinformation and efforts to limit participation, this work has never been more important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major focus of our conversation was the growing crisis of public trust. Americans deserve to know that their government is working for them, not for personal profit. That\u2019s why I\u2019m leading a sweeping anti-corruption agenda to hold bad actors accountable, crack down on conflicts of interest, reform lobbying practices, and get dark money out of our elections. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also continue to push for a full ban on stock trading by Members of Congress, the President, and Vice President. My discharge petition now has 187 signatures, bringing us closer to real reform that restores integrity in government. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the day, democracy depends on strong rules, resilient institutions, and people willing to stand up and defend both. I\u2019m committed to doing exactly that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local high school students now have until April 30th to submit their work to my office for the 2026 Congressional Art Competition!

April 10, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the face of rising tensions in Iran, Donald Trump\u2019s comments this week were disgraceful and completely out of step with American values. Threatening to commit heinous war crimes against the Iranian people is not moral leadership. President Trump continues to dishonor the American people and trample on basic decency on the world stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump is unfit for office. His actions in the last two weeks have underscored that. I will vote to remove him, whether it\u2019s by the 25th Amendment or an impeachment vote in the House of Representatives. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is time for House and Senate Republicans to join us, stand up, and stop this president who is hurting American interests around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I traveled to California and Nevada to continue our work defending the foundations of our democracy. As the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I led a series of shadow hearings and roundtable events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas alongside Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and my colleagues. 
 
These hearings bring together lawmakers, advocates, and legal experts to examine ongoing efforts to undermine our elections and identify the steps we must take to protect them. From voting rights to election security and anti-corruption reforms, we\u2019re using every tool available to push back and strengthen our democratic institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump\u2019s Budget Proposal<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A budget is a statement of values, and this week, Donald Trump made his priorities clear. His proposal takes resources away from American families while failing to invest in the things that actually lower costs and expand opportunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of strengthening essential services people rely on every day, this budget shifts focus toward funding a war Americans did not ask for. That\u2019s the wrong approach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We should be investing in working families, protecting critical support programs, and building an economy that works for everyone. Through my work in Congress and as Vice Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee, I\u2019ll keep fighting for funding that reflects those priorities and puts people first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scammers are constantly finding new ways to target people, and we\u2019re seeing a troubling rise in fraudulent text messages that appear to be official traffic fines. These messages often include links or QR codes and threaten penalties if payment isn\u2019t made immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not click on any links, scan codes, send money, or share personal information. These messages are not legitimate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you receive a notice like this, verify any ticket directly through official government channels. The safest course of action is to delete the message and report it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying informed is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Congressional Art Competition<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quick reminder for high school students across our community: submissions for this year\u2019s Congressional Art Competition are due April 17th. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a great opportunity for young artists to showcase their creativity, with the winning piece displayed in the U.S. Capitol for an entire year. I\u2019m always inspired by the incredible talent in our community and look forward to seeing this year\u2019s submissions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u202fStrengthening Families<\/strong>
Every mother deserves a safe, healthy pregnancy and every baby deserves a strong start. This week, I joined County Executive Adam Bello and community partners to announce a $4.6 million investment in maternal and infant health across Monroe County.\u202f 
\u202f 
This funding, made possible through the American Rescue Plan, is about meeting families where they are and making sure no one falls through the cracks. For too many mothers in our community, especially women of color, access to quality prenatal and postpartum care is still out of reach. The consequences are\u202fdevastating.\u202f 
\u202f 
These investments will expand home visiting programs, improve access to care, and connect families with essential resources like food, housing, and healthcare. They will also support targeted efforts to reduce maternal and infant mortality and address the disparities that have persisted for far too long.\u202f

Recognizing Leading Women<\/strong>
To celebrate the end of Women\u2019s History Month,\u202fI had the privilege of recognizing an extraordinary group of women from across our community whose leadership, courage, and dedication have made a lasting impact on the lives of others.\u202fThese are women who have broken barriers, lifted others up, and strengthened the fabric of our community in ways both big and small. From advocating for justice, to leading in business, education, healthcare, and public service, their work reminds us that progress is driven by those willing to step forward and make a difference.\u202f

Advocating for Older Americans<\/strong>
I had the pleasure of visiting two local senior centers this week, the Greece Senior Center, and Episcopal Senior Living\u2019s Beatrice Place to talk to residents and local older Americans about the issues they care about most.\u202f

From protecting Social Security and Medicare to lowering healthcare and prescription drug costs, these conversations are an important reminder of what is at stake for so many families across our region.\u202fI\u2019m\u202fgrateful to the\u202fresidents and\u202fstaff who welcomed me, and\u202fI\u2019ll\u202fkeep fighting to make sure older Americans are treated with the dignity, respect, and support they deserve.\u202f

We are now a month into Trump\u2019s costly and dangerous war with Iran. More than $25 billion has already been spent on this conflict, with no clear strategy and no clear end in sight. Now, the Trump Administration has lifted sanctions on Iranian oil, a decision which will inject billions into the very regime he claims to be confronting.

How We\u2019re Fighting Back
 
I am continuing to lead the fight against Republicans\u2019 so-called SAVE America Act, legislation that is nothing more than an attempt to silence voters and make it harder for eligible Americans to cast their ballots. The bill would impose burdensome new requirements that disproportionately impact seniors, students, and women across the country. 
 
The bill is currently in the Senate where its future remains uncertain. That hasn\u2019t stopped Donald Trump from pushing the same false narratives about our elections that undermine public trust and threaten our democracy, like the myth that mail-in voting is a threat to our elections<\/a>. In a moment of stunning hypocrisy, Trump himself voted by mail this week, the very method he has spent years attacking. 

Marking the 16th Anniversary of the ACA
 
This week marked 16 years since the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, a groundbreaking piece of legislation that expanded coverage, lowered costs, and brought millions of Americans the security of knowing they could access care when they need it. 
Today, that progress is under threat. Republicans have allowed critical ACA premium tax credits that helped families afford coverage to expire, driving up costs and putting care out of reach for millions of Americans. 

I am fighting alongside my colleagues to restore and expand these tax credits, lower costs, and protect the gains we\u2019ve made since the ACA was signed into law.
 
Appropriations Committee Hearing on the National Weather Service
 
In the weeks ahead, Congress will hold a number of appropriations hearings where I will have the opportunity to confront the Trump administrations\u2019 agency officials. I will use this opportunity to hold the administration accountable for their actions over the past year, as well as fight for fair and meaningful funding for the programs and priorities communities like ours rely on every day. I\u2019m proud to be Vice Ranking Member of the Appropriations Committee and deliver real results for Rochester families. 
 
This week we held a Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS) Appropriations hearing focused on the critical role of the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service. Reliable weather forecasting saves lives. As extreme weather becomes more frequent and more severe, we must ensure these agencies have the resources they need to keep our communities safe and informed.

We are 21 days into Trump\u2019s war in Iran and spending $1 billion a day in taxpayer dollars. Now, the Trump Administration is asking for an additional $200 billion for the Iran war. What could we be doing with just a fraction of that money instead? Supporting hardworking American families. To compare, restoring the Affordable Care Act tax credits that support lifesaving care for millions would cost $91 million a day. 

Costs are skyrocketing, the American people cannot afford another unending war in the Middle East. I\u2019ll keep fighting to bring down costs and hold the Trump Administration accountable.

This week, the U.S. Senate began debate on the SAVE America Act, the greatest voter suppression bill ever to be considered by both houses of Congress. This is an attempt to take over our elections, and it has to be stopped. 

As top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, which oversees federal elections, I joined Senator Padilla, Senator Schumer, and voting rights advocates this week to outline our fight to protect the right of every eligible American to vote and ensure that vote is counted. We are laser-focused and will use every tool available to us to stop all forms of this attempt to silence voters.

Honoring our History <\/em>

I\u2019m heartened to see a long-overdue January 6 plaque finally installed in the Capitol, however, the plaque currently hangs in an isolated corridor inaccessible to the public. By law, this plaque should hang prominently on the West Front of the Capitol, and I remain committed to giving the plaque the full recognition it deserves. On Tuesday, I led a group of my colleagues to visit the plaque and honor the law enforcement officers who served so bravely that day. 

This comes after years of shameful delay from Speaker Johnson and House Republicans. We kept fighting to display this plaque because we need to honor our history and honor the men and women who defended our Capitol at its darkest hour. We will keep fighting to prominently hang the plaque for all Americans to view.

Pentagon officials have informed Congress the first week of military operations in Iran cost $11.3 billion taxpayer dollars. At a time when families here at home are struggling with rising grocery bills, housing costs, and gas prices climbing because of this conflict, it’s clear working families are paying the price of Donald Trump’s reckless actions.   Hard working people are suffering, with no explanation for his actions, while he spends billions of dollars on his war with Iran, a war I voted to end. I will continue demanding transparency and accountability from President Trump and his administration.

This week, a long-overdue plaque honoring the law enforcement officers who defended the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 was finally installed inside the Capitol. 
For years, I have pushed to ensure these officers receive the recognition they deserve. Speaker Johnson may have tried to bury the plaque, but it\u2019s finally in the Capitol, permanently honoring the officers who defended us and this institution during a deadly riot incited by the President. 
This is a time to reaffirm our commitment to protecting the peaceful transfer of power, our elections, and the integrity of our democracy. As top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I\u2019m working to strengthen our election security, protect access to the ballot box, and ensure the will of the American people is respected every single time they cast a vote.

I joined the Town of Victor on Tuesday to announce $1,002,944 in federal funding to replace an aging sanitary sewer force main along County Road 9. 
Over the past 15 years, the existing line has failed five times, releasing untreated sewage into White Brook and creating serious risks to public health and the environment. This investment will allow the town to replace the 35-year-old pipe with a modern, corrosion-resistant system designed to operate safely and reliably for decades to come. 
I secured this funding through the Fiscal Year 2026 Community Project Funding process. I\u2019m proud to work with local leaders like Supervisor Marren to secure the federal resources needed to strengthen our infrastructure and protect the natural resources that make the Finger Lakes region such a special place to live.

I had the privilege of once again recognizing several Vietnam War veterans from our community this week by presenting them with Vietnam War Commemoration Lapel Pins in honor of their service and sacrifice. 
For far too long, many Vietnam veterans did not receive the recognition they deserved when they returned home. These commemorative pins serve as a small but meaningful way to thank them for their courage and to ensure their service to our nation is never forgotten. 
I was proud to honor these local veterans and their families, and I remain deeply grateful for the sacrifices they made on behalf of our country.

This past week, President Trump authorized new, widespread military strikes against Iran, a serious development with potentially far-reaching consequences for our national security and the safety of American service members. 
The Iranian regime is repressive, destabilizing, and its pursuit of nuclear capabilities poses a genuine global threat. But decisions to use military force carry immense risks and responsibilities. The President is empowered to act if there is an imminent threat to the United States, and I believe Congress and the American people deserve clear evidence that such a threat existed before these strikes were ordered. 
The American people cannot be asked to bear the burden of another unending war in the Middle East without transparency, accountability, and a clear strategy moving forward. Above all, I am praying for the safety of our troops and for all those in harm\u2019s way.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This week I also led a briefing for all House Democrats on election security. My responsibility as the lead Democrat on the committee that has jurisdiction over elections is to make sure that there isn\u2019t the kind of tampering with the midterm elections that the president has threatened he will do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After reports surfaced last week that the Trump Administration\u2019s Department of Homeland Security is planning to build a detention facility inside Rochester\u2019s Federal Building, I joined Senator Chuck Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand in demanding the administration immediately halt these plans and provide answers. This is a busy downtown site that houses federal courts, community services, and even a daycare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rochester deserves transparency and a real public process before any decision of this magnitude moves forward. I will continue fighting for our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Awareness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I reintroduced my resolution designating March 3 as National Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Awareness Day, continuing my commitment to elevating awareness and supporting research for one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Triple-negative breast cancer is particularly difficult to treat because it does not respond to many of the most common targeted therapies. It also disproportionately affects younger women and women of color, making awareness, early detection, and continued research especially critical. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For my family, this fight is deeply personal. My daughter Lauren battled triple-negative breast cancer for two years, and her courage continues to inspire my work to ensure that no family faces this diagnosis without hope, support, and the promise of better treatment options ahead. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women\u2019s History Month<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

March is Women\u2019s History Month, and this weekend we\u2019ll recognize International Women\u2019s Day. This is a time to recognize the extraordinary women who have shaped our communities, our country, and the fight for equality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here in Rochester, we are proud to stand on the shoulders of some of the most influential leaders of the women\u2019s rights movement. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton organized, advocated, and refused to accept a world where women were denied the right to vote. Their work helped ignite a national movement for equality that ultimately led to the passage of the 19th Amendment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This month is an opportunity not only to reflect on their courage and determination, but also to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more equal future. The progress we celebrate today was made possible by generations of women who refused to accept injustice, and their legacy continues to inspire the fight for opportunity and equality for all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honoring the Legacy of Bloody Sunday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This weekend we mark the anniversary of Bloody Sunday, when peaceful civil rights marchers were brutally attacked on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama as they fought for the fundamental right to vote <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The courage of those marchers led directly to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, one of the most important civil rights laws in our country\u2019s history. The work to protect voting rights did not end in Selma. In recent years, we have seen renewed efforts across the country to restrict access to the ballot box and weaken the protections generations fought to secure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, which oversees federal elections, I remain committed to defending every American\u2019s right to vote. That\u2019s why I\u2019m continuing to push for the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, critical legislation that would restore and strengthen the protections of the original Voting Rights Act, expand access to the ballot, and ensure our elections remain fair, secure, and accessible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The marchers in Selma risked their lives for the promise of democracy. Honoring their legacy means continuing the fight to protect that promise for every American. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We are unequivocally opposed to ICE installing detention cells in downtown Rochester, steps from a daycare and surrounded by homes and businesses. Here is what we know so far.<\/a>
The Trump Administration is moving forward in secret, with no notice, no public process, and no transparency. This is completely inappropriate and flat-out unacceptable. This President has a pattern of creating and escalating combustible situations and then forcing communities to deal with the fallout.
Rochester will not be treated as a staging ground for this administration\u2019s reckless political agenda.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Justice for Omar Ramos-Jimenez<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The Constitution is clear: due process is for all persons. Not some. Not a few. All. ICE\u2019s months-long detention of Omar Ramos-Jimenez violates that promise and is an affront to the rule of law. Their actions in this case are abhorrent but sadly what we\u2019ve come to expect from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omar is a longtime Rochester resident, business owner, and father who has pursued his immigration case the right way by following the rules and complying with check-ins for years. He is a law-abiding fixture in our community who has been held for months and is now being transferred out of state, away from his family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omar\u2019s case is, unfortunately, one of thousands like it. This situation underscores broader failures in our immigration system, where individuals with deep community ties can be detained without meaningful access to relief or the full protections they are owed under the law. My office continues to hear from neighbors and community members alarmed by what this means for his family and others in similar circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump promised he was going to get rid of rapists, murderers, and other dangerous criminals. The \u2018worst of the worst.\u2019 In describing Omar, nothing could be further from the truth. I stand with his family and will continue fighting for an immigration system that reflects our constitutional values, not the cruelty and political fear tactics we are seeing from this President.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Responding to the State of the Union<\/td><\/tr>
<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

As I sat in the chamber for the State of the Union this week, I was thinking about families here in Rochester and across the county who are working hard and still struggling to get ahead. They deserved honesty about the challenges we face and a serious plan to protect their futures. Instead, they got distortion, deflection, and dangerous lies. It was a disservice to the American people, and frankly, it was infuriating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump used his address to paint a picture of an America that simply does not exist for working families. If his policies were truly strengthening our economy, families would not be struggling to afford groceries, rent, childcare, and healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My guest for the evening was Angie Perez-Delgado, the President of Ibero-American Action League, who sees that reality every day. Families in our community are working harder than ever and still falling behind because this administration refuses to put them first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust in Our Institutions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President also claimed he wants to restore trust in government. If that were true, he would support banning Members of Congress, the President, and the Vice President from trading individual stocks. I have a discharge petition ready to force a real stock trading ban to the House floor. If he is serious about reform, he should back it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, we heard recycled, debunked attacks on our elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our elections are secure. Noncitizen voting is illegal. Both Republicans and Democrats win fair and square. Suggesting otherwise belongs in the realm of the tooth fairy and the Loch Ness monster, not a presidential address.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voting by mail is safe and secure. It is used successfully in countries like Canada, Germany, New Zealand, Iceland, and the United Kingdom. And instances of noncitizen voting are extraordinarily rare. In fact, you are more likely to be struck by lightning. When it happens, it is already illegal and should be prosecuted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The SAVE America Act, which the President touted, would hand over sensitive personal data to the Department of Homeland Security. That is not election security. That is government overreach, and I will not support it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when families are asking for help lowering costs and expanding healthcare access, the President chose instead to sow chaos and spread misinformation. The American people deserve better.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Free and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy. This week I convened a roundtable discussion with leaders in Rochester focused on the election security and anti-corruption efforts I am leading as the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We discussed the Trump Administration\u2019s ongoing attack on our elections, the spread of disinformation, and what Congress must to do strengthen voter protections and restore trust in our government. We\u2019re fighting back against attempts to undermine the National Voter Registration Act, restrict ballot access, and inject partisan politics into election oversight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also joined the Brennan Center\u2019s The Briefing Podcast to discuss the urgent fight to protect our democracy, defend voting rights, and stand up for every eligible American\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will continue using every tool available to fight corruption, defend election security, and protect every eligible American\u2019s right to cast their ballot and have it counted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bringing Home Federal Dollars<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On Wednesday, I stood with community leaders to celebrate a major federal investment in Miss Julie\u2019s School a Beauty, a one-of-a-kind training program in Rochester that equips survivors of human trafficking with trauma-informed cosmetology education and a pathway to financial independence. This funding will help support the continued operation and expansion of this program, building on its mission to remove barriers to opportunity and empower students with real skills and careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Miss Julie\u2019s is a place of healing and hope and I\u2019m proud to bring federal resources home that strengthen organizations like this that are making tangible differences in the lives of our neighbors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognizing Major Investments in Rochester<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was proud to stand with local partners from Goodwill of the Finger Lakes and Reju this week to highlight a major step forward in turning Rochester into a hub for textile recycling and sustainable economic growth. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reju is a French textile-to-textile regeneration company that selected Rochester for its first North American regeneration facility. Part of a projected $390 million investment, the planned 145,000 square-foot hub will transform discarded polyester textiles into high-quality recycled materials using innovative technology, creating new jobs, and strengthening our local economy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This investment reflects the kind of forward-looking economic development I\u2019m fighting for in Congress, projects that protect our environment, open new career pathways, and bring innovative industries to our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honoring our Vietnam War Veterans<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the greatest honors of my service in Congress is recognizing the brave men and women who answered our nation\u2019s call during the Vietnam War. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through the United States Vietnam War Commemoration, our office hosts Vietnam Veterans Pinning Ceremonies to present veterans with a commemorative lapel pin and certificate of congressional recognition. This ceremony is a way to express our lasting gratitude for their courage, sacrifice, and service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I led the debate on the House floor against Republicans\u2019 so-called SAVE America Act, a dangerous proposal that would create unnecessary barriers to the ballot box and force state election leaders to turn over private voter information to Kristi Noem\u2019s Department of Homeland Security. This legislation could disenfranchise millions of voters who lack ready access to a U.S. passport or a birth certificate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I made clear: elections in this country are run by trained local officials, not by the White House. Americans deserve free, fair, and secure elections without partisan interference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump and Republicans want to change the rules because they\u2019re terrified the American people will use their voice to vote them out of office. I\u2019ll continue using my leadership role to fight back and prevent any effort to take over our elections. I also joined Bloomberg\u2019s Balance of Power to raise the alarm on this dangerous bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Exposing Voter Suppression Efforts<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Republicans on the House Administration Committee held a hearing this week on their broader election takeover agenda. At that hearing, I called out efforts to change the rules of our elections for partisan gain. 
 
Election integrity is strengthened by transparency, adherence to the Constitution, and respect for state authority, not by intimidation or political gamesmanship. I will continue using every tool available to defend the right of every eligible American to vote. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rooting Out Corruption<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Americans are tired of watching elected officials profit off the very system they were elected to serve, and so am I. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m calling on my colleagues to sign onto my discharge petition to immediately force a vote on a real stock trading ban for Members of Congress, the President, and the Vice President. We are now up to 178 signatures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is about restoring trust. Public service should never be a pathway to personal profit. We\u2019re building momentum, and I won\u2019t stop until we get this bill to the House floor and get it passed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheering On Rochester\u2019s Olympians<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Winter Olympics are well underway, and Rochester is proudly represented on Team USA. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week we saw women\u2019s ice hockey defenseman Haley Winn score her first Olympic goal as the team swept their opponents in the preliminary rounds. Freestyle mogul skier Dylan Walczyk qualified and competed in the first final this week, and next week, we\u2019ll be cheering on aerial skier Chris Lillis as he begins his competitions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competing on the world stage is no small feat, and our entire community is behind them. Let\u2019s go Team USA!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I spent this week working for our community in Washington. Once again, I voted against funding the Department of Homeland Security. We cannot allow the cruelty and violence that ICE continues to inflict on our neighbors and communities.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We’re Fighting Back<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right now, our country is facing a deep and growing crisis of public trust. Americans are tired of watching powerful people exploit the system for personal gain while working families are left behind, and they\u2019re right to demand better. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m proud to be leading a discharge petition to force a vote on a real congressional stock trading ban, one without loopholes or excuses. Members of Congress should not be able to buy or sell stocks, and neither should the president or vice president. Public service should not be a path to personal profit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Black History Month we honor the generations of Black Americans whose leadership and contributions have shaped our nation. Black history is not just a reflection of the past; it is a vital part of who we are today and who we strive to become as a nation. 
 
As we celebrate this month, we also recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of building a more just and equitable future <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cheering On Local Olympians<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Winter Olympics are officially underway, and communities across the country are coming together to celebrate the incredible athletes representing Team USA on the world stage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here in Rochester, we\u2019re rooting on Chris Lillis, a freestyle skier competing in aerials, Haley Winn, a defenseman representing Team USA in women\u2019s ice hockey, Emily Renna, a bobsledder, and Dylan Walczyk, a freestyle skier competing in moguls. These are proud local athletes who are competing among the very best in the world.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As these Games begin, we celebrate the spirit of competition, teamwork, and unity that the Olympics represent, and we proudly stand behind Chris, Haley, Emily, Dan, and all of Team USA. We\u2019ll be cheering them on every step of the way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honoring Helen Pluta<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I had the honor of speaking on the House floor to recognize the life and legacy of an extraordinary Rochesterian, Helen Pluta. Helen was a woman defined by compassion, generosity, and an unwavering commitment to caring for others. Her impact on our community is profound and enduring. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside her late husband, Andy, Helen helped bring to life the Pluta Cancer Center, a place of hope and healing for thousands of patients and families, including my own. While we mourn her passing, we also give thanks for a life rooted in service, love, and lasting impact. Rochester is a better place because Helen Pluta walked among us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The scenes we saw out of Minnesota this week were sickening. The recklessness and brutality of the Trump Administration know no bounds. Like so many of you, I am disgusted and I am angry. Read on to hear how I\u2019m fighting back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Trump\u202fAdministration\u2019s aggressive deployment of ICE and Border Patrol agents has led to\u202fthe needless\u202fdeaths of U.S. citizens in Minneapolis\u202fand\u202funderscores\u202fthe urgent need for accountability, oversight, and a fundamental shift in\u202fpriorities. 
I signed on to a Congressional resolution calling for the immediate impeachment of United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem before more innocent lives are destroyed by her cruelty. No one\u2014not ICE agents and certainly not Secretary Noem\u2014should be above the law, and\u202fthe Secretary must be held responsible for the atrocities committed by her department.
Taxpayer dollars\u202fshould be used to\u202fprotect\u202four\u202fcommunities, not be used to fuel violence and fear in our streets.\u202fI voted \u2018NO\u2019 on a funding measure for DHS, and I will continue to do so until meaningful change and respect for the rule of law are restored.\u202fWe can never give up on the fight to ensure\u202fsafety, freedom, and justice for all. <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
Fighting for Our Democracy<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
In the aftermath of these tragic events, instead of protecting the American people, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi is playing political games. In a letter to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz<\/a> following last weekend\u2019s shooting, she demanded access to state voter records, including sensitive, constitutionally protected information, as a condition for federal cooperation in removing ICE from the state. <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n
The Trump Administration\u2019s blatant attempt to hold our democracy hostage by weaponizing our elections is unacceptable. I\u2019m demanding a joint hearing with Attorney General Bondi and Secretary Noem on their use of federal law enforcement to shake down the state of Minnesota in service of the President\u2019s political interests.

Defending Access to Affordable Healthcare<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I held a press conference this week to share the story of Lauren Goetz, a local small business owner whose healthcare premiums rose by nearly 350% in 2026 due to the expiration of the Affordable Care Act Enhanced Premium Tax Credits. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hard-working small business owners like Lauren are being forced into impossible choices because Senate Republicans and the Trump Administration failed to act\u2014choices between their health and the businesses they worked their whole lives to build. Health insurance should never be the reason a small business closes, jobs disappear, or vital community services are lost. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The House has already passed a bipartisan extension of these tax credits, and now the Senate and the Trump Administration must do their jobs and deliver relief before stories like Lauren\u2019s become commonplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
