Unfortunately, this week featured another childish antic by the President. He is now pretending to rename a lake as an attempted distraction from his disastrous trade talks with Canada. While Rochester families deal with the impacts of a trade war he started, Trump is playing games with a map. We deserve better than this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We’re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week\u2019s Supreme Court decision to allow the Trump Administration to move forward with plans to restrict\u202fmail-in voting\u202fbefore the midterm elections could unnecessarily create chaos and confusion weeks before ballots should be mailed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the Court\u2019s meddling, the decision does not give the President power he does not have in how states run their elections. The Executive Order is still not lawful and the power to regulate elections belongs only to Congress and the states. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joined a panel on MS NOW to discuss the importance of protecting the integrity of our elections and making sure American voters have confidence in the democratic process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Voters should feel confident casting their ballots and knowing their voices will be heard. As top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I will continue working to protect our elections and support our local elections administrators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Summer Day at Seabreeze<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had a great time joining 1199SEIU members and their families for Family Fun Day. It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with the hardworking healthcare workers who dedicate themselves every day to caring for our neighbors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our healthcare workers play such an important role in keeping our community healthy and strong, and I\u2019m grateful for everything they do for families across our region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defending the Right to Vote<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week marks the 63rd anniversary of the historic March on Washington, when hundreds of thousands of Americans came together to demand equality, justice, and a stronger democracy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than six decades later, the fight to protect the right to vote continues. The Voting Rights Act was one of the landmark achievements of the Civil Rights Movement, but the recent Supreme Court decision in Louisiana v. Callais gutted key protections that protected every eligible American\u2019s right to the ballot box. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m working to protect and expand the progress generations of Americans fought to achieve and ensure every American voter can participate freely, fairly, and with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applications Open for Service Academy Nominations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each year, my office has the opportunity to nominate exceptional students for a U.S. Service Academy appointment. The nomination process is now open for the class of 2031 for the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Coast Guard Academy, and Merchant Marine Academy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We’re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I joined my colleagues in demanding President Trump rescind his executive order overhauling longstanding childhood vaccine recommendations and encouraging states to reconsider school immunization requirements. As families are preparing to send their children back to school, they deserve clear, reliable public health guidance rooted in science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The order threatens to create confusion for parents and doctors, place new financial and logistical burdens on families, and undermine access to routine childhood vaccinations. It also comes as our nation is experiencing its highest surge in measles cases in 35 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We must keep working to protect access to safe, effective vaccines and ensure families have the information they need to keep their children healthy. Read the full letter here.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connecting Community Healthcare and Nutrition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impactful healthcare is about more than what happens in the exam room. A prescription can only go so far if a patient goes home without enough food to eat or without access to the nutritious foods they need to manage diabetes, heart disease, or other chronic conditions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I stood alongside leaders from our local Federally Qualified Health Centers to announce my legislation, the Improving Health Through Integrated Food and Nutrition Services at Federally Qualified Health Centers Act. This bill would help community health centers provide the kind of wraparound care that treats patients as whole people, bringing healthcare, nutrition services, food assistance, and trusted support together in one place. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our community health centers know their patients, they know their families, and they understand that health is shaped by so much more than medication alone. Especially as the Trump Administration\u2019s cuts to Medicaid and SNAP put greater strain on families, I\u2019m fighting to give these providers the tools they need to care for the whole person and help every patient live a healthier life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporting Our First Responders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When an emergency happens, our firefighters and EMS professionals are the people we count on to answer the call. They put their own safety on the line, often during someone else\u2019s most difficult moment, to protect our neighbors and keep our communities safe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I met with the Monroe County Fire Chiefs Association, Pittsford Volunteer Ambulance, and local EMS leaders to hear directly about the challenges facing our fire and emergency medical services and what they need from partners at the federal level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our region depends on strong career and volunteer departments, and the people who serve in them deserve our support. I\u2019m grateful for their service, their sacrifice, and their commitment to our community. I\u2019ll keep working in Congress to ensure our first responders have the resources and support they need to continue their lifesaving work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Introducing Average Joe<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We’re Fighting Back<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For working families across our country, childcare has become one of their largest household expenses, while provider shortages are making it harder to find reliable care at all. Parents should not have to choose between going to work and finding safe, affordable care for their children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I unveiled my Childcare Affordability Agenda, a comprehensive package of legislation to lower costs, expand access to high-quality childcare, strengthen local providers, and support the childcare workforce. My agenda includes proposals to cap childcare costs for families, expand assistance and early learning programs, invest in new childcare capacity, and raise wages for childcare workers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m fighting for concrete, common-sense solutions that give working parents some breathing room and ensure every child has access to the care they deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Staying Informed About Our Elections<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joined the Monroe County Board of Elections at their headquarters this week to learn more about their work to administer our local elections and help voters access the information they need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making sure voters have access to accurate, trusted information is an important part of strengthening confidence in our elections. The Board of Elections offers updates on upcoming elections, important dates and deadlines, changes to the voting process, and other resources for Monroe County voters. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping Kids Learning All Summer<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer break should be a time for kids to recharge, not a time when they lose access to healthy meals or fall behind in school. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s why I introduced the Summer Meals and Learning Act, legislation to pair summer meal sites with reading programs and help children stay healthy, engaged, and ready to learn. The bill would help schools keep libraries open and connect students with books and other learning opportunities while they access nutritious summer meals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every child deserves the tools they need to succeed. By bringing meals and learning together in one place, we can give more kids the support they need throughout the summer and help them return to the classroom for a strong school year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supporting Our Seniors<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was a pleasure visiting Rochester Regional Health\u2019s ElderONE PACE Center this week and seeing firsthand the important work their dedicated team is doing to support older adults in our community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ElderONE helps our neighbors live safely and independently while remaining connected to the communities they call home. I appreciated the opportunity to learn more about their work and meet the people who make that care possible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Expanding the Dream of Homeownership<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every family deserves a safe, stable, and affordable place to call home. Homeownership can provide families with security, help build generational wealth, and strengthen neighborhoods for years to come. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I visited the Greater Rochester Habitat for Humanity to see their work and learn more about how they are helping local families achieve the dream of owning a home. We discussed how we can continue expanding access to affordable homeownership and creating more opportunities for hardworking families across our region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump, the most corrupt President this country has ever seen, only seeks to serve himself and his billionaire friends. The Constitution gives presidents the power to grant pardons to correct injustice, not to reward political allies or wealthy donors. That’s why I introduced the No Payoffs For Pardons Act<\/u><\/a>, legislation to increase transparency and crack down on corruption in the presidential clemency process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My bill would require recipients of presidential pardons and commutations to disclose significant financial gifts connected to their clemency, make clear that federal bribery laws apply to the President and Vice President, and establish a stronger statute of limitations for bribery offenses involving presidential pardons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American people deserve to know that the pardon power is being used to serve justice, not personal or political interests. I’ll keep fighting to strengthen accountability, increase transparency, and ensure no one, including the President, is above the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building Rochester\u2019s Workforce<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creating more opportunities for workers starts with investing in the resources they need to succeed. That’s why I fought to secure $1.6 million in federal funding to help establish the new RochesterWorks Downtown Career Center, a one-stop hub that will connect job seekers with workforce training, education, career services, and local employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located at Monroe Community College’s downtown campus, the new center will make it easier for students, workers, and families to gain the skills needed for high-demand careers while helping local businesses find the talented workforce they need to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m proud to have helped make this project possible, and I appreciate our partners’ work in moving it forward. Together, we’re making a lasting investment in Rochester’s workforce, strengthening our local economy, and creating more pathways to opportunity for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defending our Democracy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joined MSNOW this week to discuss my ongoing work to protect our elections and strengthen Americans’ faith in our democracy. As the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I’m committed to ensuring our elections remain free, fair, and secure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We discussed the shadow hearing Leader Hakeem Jeffries and I hosted in Rochester last week, where we brought together election officials, voting rights advocates, and community leaders to examine the growing threats facing our democracy. While the Trump Administration continues to undermine confidence in our elections, we’re focused on protecting the freedom to vote and ensuring every eligible American can make their voice heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our democracy depends on public trust. I’ll continue leading efforts to safeguard our elections, defend the right to vote, and make sure our democratic institutions remain accountable to the people they serve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was an honor to join the West Henrietta Fire Department this week to celebrate its 100th Anniversary and present a Certificate of Congressional Recognition in honor of a century of dedicated service to our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the past 100 years, generations of volunteer firefighters have answered the call, protecting their neighbors with courage, selflessness, and unwavering commitment. Their legacy is a testament to the spirit of public service that makes our community so strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I was proud to welcome House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries to Rochester as we hosted the Voter Protection Shadow Hearing at City Hall focused on safeguarding our elections ahead of the 2026 midterms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We heard from election law experts, voting rights advocates, and local election officials about the challenges facing our democracy and the steps needed to protect every eligible American’s right to vote. Our discussion focused on strengthening voter confidence, supporting election workers, protecting against improper voter roll removals, and ensuring our elections remain free, fair, and secure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, I’m leading House Democrats’ efforts to fight back against Donald Trump\u2019s attempts to subvert our elections and prepare for future threats. Rochester has long been a global leader in optics and photonics, and I’m working to keep our community at the cutting edge. This week, we announced $850,000 in federal funding for Monroe Community College to establish a new Precision Optics Finishing Lab at its Advanced Technology Education Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This investment will expand hands-on workforce training for students, apprentices, and current workers using the same advanced equipment found in the precision optics and semiconductor industries. By preparing highly skilled workers for these in-demand careers, we’re strengthening our local workforce, supporting employers across our region, and building on Rochester’s leadership in advanced manufacturing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing with Organized Labor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I met with the Rochester Building and Construction Trades Council to discuss the issues that matter most to union workers and their families.  We had a productive conversation about the future of organized labor, investing in our infrastructure, expanding workforce development opportunities, and ensuring workers are paid fairly for the jobs they do. The nearly 10,000 skilled trades workers represented by the council help build and maintain the roads, bridges, schools, and businesses our community depends on. I\u2019m grateful for the opportunity to hear from them and reaffirm my commitment to fighting for good-paying union jobs and an economy that works for working families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening our Manufacturing Economy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joined industry leaders, defense partners, and my fellow government leaders for an APEX Industry and Partner Roundtable focused on expanding manufacturing opportunities and strengthening our regional economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussion highlighted the importance of supporting businesses that are driving innovation in advanced manufacturing, precision machining, and defense technologies, while ensuring local companies have the tools they need to compete and grow. Rochester has the talent, expertise, and manufacturing legacy to lead in these critical industries. I was proud to help kick off the conversation and reaffirm my commitment to securing federal investments that create jobs and strengthen our workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Clean drinking water is a basic necessity, and no family should have to worry about harmful chemicals coming out of their tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I joined more than 100 of my House colleagues in calling on the Trump Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency to reverse its decision to weaken federal protections against PFAS, also known as “forever chemicals,” in our drinking water. These toxic chemicals have been linked to serious health conditions, including certain cancers, immune system suppression, and developmental issues, and they have contaminated water supplies in communities across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EPA’s existing drinking water standards were built on years of scientific research and are expected to protect millions of Americans from dangerous PFAS exposure. Rolling back these safeguards would put public health at risk while delaying action families have already waited too long to see. Safe drinking water should never be a luxury. I’ll keep fighting to protect clean water, hold polluters accountable, and ensure every family has access to safe, healthy drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protecting Our Veteran Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans and their families should be aware of a new scam targeting those who have served our country. Scammers are mailing postcards claiming recipients may qualify for additional VA benefits through a so-called “Veterans Savings Program.” These mailings may also reference CHAMPVA, TRICARE, dental coverage, or extra payments to appear legitimate. In reality, the Veterans Savings Program does not exist, and these postcards are not from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The goal is to pressure veterans into calling a phone number where scammers attempt to collect sensitive personal and financial information, including Social Security numbers and bank account details. If you receive one of these postcards, do not call the number listed or share any personal information. If you have questions about your VA benefits, contact the Department of Veterans Affairs directly or reach out to my office. We’re always here to help connect veterans and their families with trusted resources and protect them from fraud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking Policy with the Greater Rochester Chamber<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was glad to join the Greater Rochester Chamber for a Policy Matters discussion with local business leaders about the issues shaping our region and our economy this week. Our conversation focused on the challenges and opportunities facing local employers, the importance of investing in our workforce, and how we can strengthen Rochester’s economy while creating new opportunities for businesses and working families alike. I’m grateful to the Greater Rochester Chamber for bringing our community together for these important conversations and for their continued advocacy on behalf of businesses across our region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honoring a Community Leader<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I took to the House floor to recognize Hillary Olson for her extraordinary leadership of the Rochester Museum & Science Center and the lasting impact she’s had on our community. Through her vision and dedication, the RMSC emerged stronger than ever, inspiring generations of young people to explore science, history, and discovery. While we’re sad to see Hillary leave Rochester, we’re grateful for all she’s given our community and wish her the very best in this next chapter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

July 4, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we head into the Fourth of July weekend, I find myself reflecting on the promise of our democracy and the work it takes to preserve it. This week, the Supreme Court reaffirmed important constitutional protections, including safeguarding birthright citizenship and preserving access to mail-in voting. At the same time, other decisions continued a troubling trend of weakening civil liberties and eroding confidence in our elections.  Our democracy is never guaranteed. It depends on citizens who stay informed, stay engaged, and never stop working to build a more perfect Union.\u202fThat’s\u202fthe enduring promise of America, not that\u202fwe’ve\u202falways gotten it right, but that each generation has the opportunity and responsibility to make our country better. Thank you for continuing to raise your voice,\u202fparticipate\u202fin our democracy, and hold your government accountable. After all, in our country the highest title\u202fisn\u2019t\u202fPresident or Congressperson,\u202fit\u2019s\u202fcitizen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How\u202fWe\u2019re\u202fFighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Every American has the right to speak freely without fearing intimidation or retaliation from their government.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reports recently\u202femerged\u202fthat federal agents tracked down and intimidated a member of our Rochester community after he criticized ICE. According to his attorney, agents came to his home and later appeared at the hotel where he was staying after returning from overseas.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is deeply disturbing. No one should be targeted for exercising their constitutional rights, and no federal agency should be allowed to abuse its authority to silence dissent.\u202f  My office is looking into these reports to ensure any government overreach is addressed. I will keep fighting to protect free speech, defend our constitutional rights, and hold federal agencies accountable to the people they serve.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing Up for Our Community Members<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As we continue to push back against our broken immigration system,\u202fI took to the House floor after visiting\u202four neighbor, Omar Ramos-Jimenez, who is currently being detained at the Buffalo Federal Detention Facility in Batavia.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Omar has lived in Rochester for more than 30 years. He has worked, paid taxes, raised his family, and built his life in our community. During our conversation, he told me the same thing\u202fover and over: “I just want to go home.” Not to Mexico, but to Rochester, because this is his home.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u202fmade\u202fclear that we cannot lose sight of our values. Dignity must be nonnegotiable. Due process must be nonnegotiable. Basic humanity must be nonnegotiable. I will continue fighting for Omar, for families like his, and for an immigration system rooted in fairness, decency, and respect for every person.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No One is Above the Law\u202f<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This week marked\u202ftwo\u202fyears\u202fsince the Supreme Court’s decision in Trump v. United States, a ruling that granted sweeping criminal immunity to presidents for their official acts and weakened one of the most fundamental principles of our democracy: that no one is above the law.\u202f <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In response, I introduced a constitutional amendment to make clear that every president is fully accountable under the law, just like every other American. Our Constitution was never meant to shield those in the highest office from criminal responsibility or place any individual beyond the reach of justice.\u202f  Protecting our democracy means rooting out corruption wherever it exists.\u202fThat’s\u202fwhy\u202fI\u2019m\u202falso leading\u202fefforts to ban stock trading by Members of Congress, the President, Vice President, and Supreme Court Justices,\u202ffighting\u202fto get dark money out of politics, and\u202fworking\u202fto restore transparency and accountability across our government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Happy Independence Day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

June 27, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Trump\u2019s abrupt cancellation this week of the signing ceremony for a rare bipartisan housing bill is deeply disappointing and undermines an important effort to lower housing costs and expand access to affordable homes. He declared housing relief would have to wait until Congress passes his so-called SAVE America Act. Donald Trump would see families lose out on affordable housing to satisfy his desperate attempt to silence millions of Americans. The SAVE America Act would create new barriers to voter registration, burden election officials, and make it harder for eligible citizens to participate in our democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why so many Americans have lost faith in our government. I promise I won\u2019t rest until every American feels safe in their fundamental right to vote and knows that their elected officials are focused on bringing down costs for our hardworking families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the cost-of-living crisis, Republicans are proposing the largest Pentagon budget in American history while attempting to cut nearly $13 billion from programs that help working families.  During this week\u2019s Appropriations Committee markup for the Fiscal Year 2027 Defense Funding Bill, my colleagues and I raised concerns about provisions that fail to support Ukraine, allow Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to make sweeping cuts across the Department without meaningful congressional oversight, and authorize the deployment of the National Guard for activities unrelated to military readiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working families deserve leaders focused on lowering costs and strengthening our communities. I’ll continue fighting for policies that put people first and ensure taxpayer dollars are spent responsibly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AI and the Future of Congressional Research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Ranking Member of the Committee on House Administration, I participated in a hearing to examine how artificial intelligence can strengthen the Congressional Research Service (CRS), one of Congress’s most trusted nonpartisan resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more than a century, CRS has helped Members of Congress navigate complex policy challenges by providing accurate, objective analysis. As Congress considers how AI can improve efficiency and expand access to information, I emphasized an important principle: technology should support our talented researchers, not replace them. AI has the potential to help analysts work more efficiently and respond to the growing demands placed on Congress. But the expertise, judgment, and professionalism of CRS staff remain its greatest strength. As these tools continue to evolve, we must ensure any investments in AI uphold the Service’s commitment to accuracy, nonpartisanship, and excellence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Four Years Without Roe v. Wade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week marked 4 years since the Supreme Court\u2019s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending nearly 50 years of federal protection for reproductive rights. Since then, states across the country have enacted extreme abortion restrictions, created dangerous uncertainty for women and families, and limited access to care for millions of Americans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Healthcare decisions belong between a patient and their doctor, without interference. Every person deserves the freedom to make their own choice about their health, their family, and their future.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when my mother had more rights than my granddaughters do, the fight for reproductive freedom remains as important as ever.  Attacks on reproductive rights continue across the country. I remain committed to protecting access to reproductive healthcare and fighting for the fundamental freedoms that all Americans deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 Congressional Art Competition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As co-chair of the 2026 Congressional Art Competition, I had the privilege of speaking at the winner\u2019s celebration at the U.S. Capitol this week. Talented students across the country were recognized for their creativity, hard work, and artistic achievement. Each year, this competition showcases the remarkable talent of students across the nation and gives young artists the opportunity to have their work displayed in the Capitol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am especially proud to recognize Manjing Luo, who\u2019s piece \u201cWalk Along the Erie\u201d, was selected to represent Rochester\u2019s District. Her work stood alongside winners from every region of our country and served as a testament to the creativity and talent found right here in Rochester. June 20, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, we commemorate Juneteenth\u2014the day the last enslaved Americans learned of their freedom in Galveston, Texas. I\u2019m thinking about the generations of Black Americans whose activism, courage, and political power have pushed this country closer to its promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That fight has never been easy, and recent attacks on the Voting Rights Act are a painful reminder that it is far from over.  It is fitting this weekend also marks Father\u2019s Day. We owe so much to those who fought for the America we have today, and to the parents, grandparents, mentors, and father figures who taught us what it means to keep showing up. We have a responsibility to carry that work forward and keep building a country worthy of their sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My own father shaped who I am and how I approach this work, and I\u2019m grateful for all those who lead with love, steadiness, and guidance.  Read on to hear about my work this week:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A number of people have asked me about the reported peace agreement with Iran, which members of Congress and the American people have not had the opportunity to review.  This agreement appears to do little to address the concerns that were used to justify military action in the first place. In fact, it only attempts to solve the problems that Donald Trump created. 

After billions of dollars spent and the loss of 13 American service members, I\u2019m demanding the accountability and transparency Americans deserve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrating our Future Leaders<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the Trump Administration\u2019s continued chaos abroad, there is so much to be grateful for in our local community. It was a privilege to witness the joy and connection of our community at our Service Academy Send-Off Ceremony this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was an honor to welcome several outstanding students and their families to our event. Each of these students earned an appointment to one of our nation’s prestigious service academies, a remarkable achievement that reflects years of hard work, dedication, and a commitment to service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the ceremony, I presented each student with a congressional challenge coin and a statement entered into the Congressional Record recognizing their accomplishment. We were also joined by local service academy alumni who shared their experiences and encouragement.  I congratulate Ronan Boyle, Paul Brooker, Augustine Galambos, Ryan Galle, Benjamin Hinds, James Kester, Michael Kusch, and Ariana Toner on this achievement. Our community is proud of them, and I look forward to seeing all they accomplish in service to our country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Investing in Community Spaces<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was proud to join local leaders this week to celebrate two community projects made possible through funding I helped secure through the American Rescue Plan Act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, I joined Mayor Malik Evans and Rochester Public Library officials for the grand opening of the newly renovated Maplewood Branch Library. The expanded facility includes new community gathering spaces, classrooms, a larger parking area, and an outdoor play space that will serve children and families for years to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also joined Town of Greece Supervisor Jeff McCann and local officials to celebrate the reopening of the Carter Park playground. The project transformed a popular community space and created a modern, accessible place for families to gather, play, and stay active.  These projects are a reminder of what can happen when federal and local partners work together to invest in the places that bring communities together and improve quality of life for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Celebrating Caribbean Heritage Month<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I was honored to host our second annual Caribbean Heritage Month Recognition Ceremony and celebrate several outstanding members of Rochester’s Caribbean community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each honoree received a statement entered into the Congressional Record recognizing their leadership, service, and contributions to our region. From the arts and business to public service and community advocacy, these individuals have helped strengthen and enrich our community.  I am grateful for all they have done and proud to recognize their extraordinary contributions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Showcasing Rochester\u2019s History<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I joined WXXI Public Media for a tour of PBS’s Antiques Roadshow during its visit to Genesee Country Village & Museum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event brought together people from across the region to share treasured heirlooms and the stories behind them, helping showcase the history and culture that make our community so special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

June 13, 2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans promised to lower costs for working families. Instead, they\u2019ve passed legislation that cuts healthcare, threatens food assistance, and makes life harder for families\u2014all while pouring billions of taxpayer dollars into ICE and expanding an agenda rooted in fear and division.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here in Rochester, we’ve seen the consequences firsthand. Immigrant families are living with uncertainty, communities are being left out of decisions that directly affect them, and hardworking Americans are being asked to shoulder the burden of misplaced priorities in Washington.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it’s standing up for working families, demanding accountability from government agencies, or protecting our democratic institutions, I will continue fighting for policies that lower costs, strengthen communities, and uphold the dignity of every person in our region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We’re Fighting Back: Standing Up to ICE in Our Community<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I fought against the House Republican-led Homeland Security funding bill<\/a>, which would provide billions in additional funding to ICE while continuing to prioritize detention and deportation efforts over investments that help families afford healthcare, food, and other necessities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the same time, our community has been demanding the Trump Administration halts plans to establish a detention facility inside Rochester’s Kenneth B. Keating Federal Building. This decision was made without public input and without consultation with local leaders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To combat this reckless approach, I offered an amendment that would require transparency, community engagement, and consultation with local stakeholders before moving forward with projects like this. These are basic safeguards the public should expect from their government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unfortunately, House Republicans rejected those commonsense protections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We know this is wrong, people like Omar Ramos-Jimenez<\/a> don’t deserve to be separated from their families and the people of Rochester deserve a voice in decisions that affect their neighborhoods, their families, and their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I will continue fighting for transparency, accountability, and an immigration system that reflects our values while keeping our communities safe. The fight is far from over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fighting for the Interests of Hardworking Families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also spoke out during the House Appropriations Committee’s consideration of the Fiscal Year 2027 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies funding bill<\/a>, opposing a Republican proposal that would make devastating cuts to programs working families rely on every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when families are already struggling with the cost of healthcare, childcare, housing, and education, House Republicans are proposing to slash investments in the very programs designed to help people succeed. Their bill would jeopardize access to healthcare, reduce support for students pursuing higher education, weaken funding for K-12 schools, and cut critical research focused on maternal health and patient safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These priorities are backwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Government should be working to expand opportunity, strengthen the middle class, and support vulnerable Americans\u2014not making life harder for working families while protecting the interests of the wealthiest among us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I voted no because I believe federal investments should reflect our values and help build a stronger future for every family, not just those at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protecting Our Democracy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I continue my fight to ensure government works for everyday Americans\u2014not special interests, wealthy donors, or those already holding power\u2014I’m also leading efforts to strengthen our democracy and restore accountability to our institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, my Anti-Corruption and Democracy Reform Task Force convened advocates, legal experts, and democracy organizations to examine reforms that would help restore public trust in our federal courts and strengthen the foundations of our democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For too long, Americans have watched a Supreme Court that too often appears more responsive to special interests, corporations, and powerful political actors than to the people it serves. From reproductive freedom to voting rights and government accountability, the stakes could not be higher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why my Task Force is exploring meaningful reforms that strengthen public confidence in our institutions, protect fundamental rights, and ensure our judiciary remains accountable to the Constitution and the American people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenges facing our democracy didn’t appear overnight, and meaningful reform won’t happen overnight either. But I remain committed to exploring every option to strengthen our institutions, protect Americans’ rights, and ensure our government remains accountable to the people it serves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I voted YES on a War Powers Resolution that would end Trump’s illegal war in Iran. It is time to bring our service members home. At a time when Americans need help affording everyday essentials, the Trump Administration is spending tens of billions, driving up costs, and making life harder for working families. It must stop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How We\u2019re Fighting Back<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy, and every eligible American deserves to cast their ballot free from fear, intimidation, or interference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, during an Appropriations Committee oversight hearing, I questioned Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche about repeated comments made by President Trump suggesting federal agents could be deployed to polling places during elections. Federal law is clear: armed federal law enforcement officers and military personnel cannot be stationed at polling places, and any effort to intimidate or interfere with a person’s right to vote carries criminal penalties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the top Democrat on the Committee on House Administration, which oversees federal elections, I take threats to our democratic process seriously. During the hearing, I pressed Acting Attorney General Blanche to commit that the Department of Justice would follow the law and ensure federal agents are not deployed to polling places. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Confidence in our institutions is being tested. We have a responsibility to uphold the law, protect the integrity of our elections, and defend every American’s right to vote. I will continue fighting to protect our democratic institutions and hold this administration accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Showcasing Rochester Innovation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, I was proud to welcome Representative Sarah McBride to Rochester to showcase how our community continues to lead the nation in science, technology, and innovation. As a member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee, Rep. McBride came to see firsthand the groundbreaking work being done by researchers, students, and industry leaders across our region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We began at L3Harris, where we toured their world-class optics facilities and learned more about Rochester’s contributions to some of the most ambitious scientific missions ever undertaken. Technology developed right here in our community has helped power projects like the James Webb Space Telescope and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, advancing discoveries that deepen our understanding of the universe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We also visited Rochester Institute of Technology, where we met with Dr. Don Figer to discuss cutting-edge research in astronomy and astrophysics. While on campus, we toured MAGIC Spell Studios, where students are gaining hands-on experience in digital media, immersive technologies, and other rapidly growing fields. These talented young people are developing the skills needed to lead the industries of tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During our stop at the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics, researchers showcased groundbreaking work in laser science, fusion energy, and quantum information science. The tour highlighted how Rochester continues to lead the way in scientific discovery and innovation with impacts that reach far beyond our community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rochester has always been defined by innovation, and I was grateful for the opportunity to share the incredible talent, ingenuity, and groundbreaking work taking place here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Standing up for Working Families<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Across the country, families are sitting at their kitchen tables struggling to make ends meet. Rent is too high, groceries cost more every month, and for too many people, owning a home feels completely out of reach. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, during the House Appropriations Committee markup of the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development funding bill, I spoke out against this legislation that fails to support hardworking families. When the cost of living is the number one concern for working families, Congress should be focused on lowering costs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, this bill cuts affordable housing production, reduces eviction prevention assistance, and slashes transit programs that millions of Americans rely on every day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Families deserve a safe place to live, a reliable way to get to work, and the chance to build a stable future. This bill does not deliver on those priorities, and I opposed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wear Orange Day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week, communities across the country marked Wear Orange Day, a time to honor the victims and survivors of gun violence and recommit ourselves to building safer communities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gun violence continues to impact families in every corner of our nation. We owe it to those we’ve lost, and those whose lives have been forever changed, to pursue commonsense solutions that keep dangerous weapons out of the wrong hands while supporting law enforcement and protecting public safety. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s why I recently led more than 90 of my colleagues in demanding answers from the Department of Justice and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives<\/a> after the Trump Administration announced plans to roll back dozens of federal gun safety regulations. We raised concerns that these changes could weaken background check requirements, make it harder for law enforcement to trace firearms used in crimes, and undermine years of progress in reducing gun violence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Communities are working to reduce violence and keep families safe. Moving backward on common sense gun safety measures is the wrong approach. I will continue fighting for policies that protect our neighborhoods, support law enforcement, and save lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
